Leyla

AA 1/00

My name is Leyla and I was diagnosed with AA in January of 2000. At first it was a slow recovery since my platelet count when I arrived at the hospital was 2k and my body was destroying the counts more than half daily. My doctor said that if I would have waited a few more days I would not have lived to tell about it but we are all here for a reason so do not get discouraged. Like I was saying I arrived at the hospital and they placed me in isolation really quick since my diagnosis was Leukemia. The people from my church then came and prayed for me and the leukemia was not in my body any longer and my lymphnodes were back to normal but of course they could not explain what happened and after many tests and 6 bone marrow biopsies they diagnosed me with AA. I was very weak and since I was only 21 years old they wanted to do the transplant right away. I refused because I didn't want such a drastic change in my life. So after a month in the hospital I was finally stable and I went home. My counts have gone from 2k platelets, 15k RBC, and .5 WBC to currently 90K platelets, 25 RBC and 4.5 WBC. I went back to work and school right away and I am about to graduate with my Industrial Engineering degre. Whoever reads this knows that there might not be a cure but 90% of the battle can be won mentally. My doctor said I was as a severe case as anyone has probably seen since my counts were very severe but here I am. Don't give up, I know how hard it can be at times but you can do it like I have.

P.S. Whenever you go through bad times just read this: I was in complete isolation people could only touch me with gloves and gowns. I had no veins whatsoever and they had to put a catheder directly into my aorta. The claimed the catheder got infected and they removed it to later find out that it wasn't and put another in. they did 6 bone marrow biopsies in one week only in two spots, yes they would come back to the same fresh hole and drill the next day. Since I am a female I get my monthly friend and that means that either they stop my period or I bleed to death. So they gave me this medicine that makes my body believe that it is pregnant and I went through all the pains and aches. At one point my counts were so low that my body started the process of matamorphesis(I think that's how you spell it) and my bones and muscles were locked and I couldn't move. But even after all this I am here healthier than ever and nobody would even guess that I ever even had a cold.

This is the first time I ever write about my story, sorry I wrote so much but I really hope I could inspire and encourage someone with my story. I am watching the Trinidad fight now so GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!!!!!!! Overall have FAITH IN GOD!!!!!!!
