Hi Susie:
I think Mechelle makes a good point--we city dwellers are pretty much surrounded by various toxins. We basically have to do the best we can and then just let the knives fly and see where they land. Ha! Anyway, what I really wanted to say is that there's a guy named Dr. B.C. Wolverton. He is a scientist who worked for NASA designing breathable environments for lunar habitat. Wolverton discovered that houseplants are the best filters of common pollutants such as ammonia, formaldehyde, and benzene. Wolverton wrote a book called How to Grow Fresh Air, 50 Houseplants that Purify Your Home or Office. He writes how hundreds of poisonous chemicals can be released by furniture, carpets, and building material, and then trapped by closed ventilation systems. In his book Wolverton rates these plants for their effectiveness in removing various pollutants, and the ease to grow and maintain these plants. You might want to look into it and get some plants indoors to help clean up your air quality.
Take care,
Marla
P.S. Wolverton also has another book on purifying water with water plants. I believe he designed a whole system that uses plants alone to purify water. Very cool dude.
P.P.S. I've done a little house painting myself while recovering from AA, and so far so good. Er, unless that's why my platelets are still not in the normal range. Ha! (But whites and reds have been in normal ranges for a while now even while phlebotomizing. MCV is also approaching normal levels. Platelets have been at a good livable level--88K just a couple weeks ago).
